General information about stainless steel:

V2A is the general term for the most frequently used stainless steel, which is used for example in the construction of railings, vehicles and kitchens and is used in the beverage, food and pharmaceutical industries.

V4A is similar to V2A stainless steel but is additionally alloyed with 2% Mo. This results in becoming more resistant to corrosion in chloride-containing (saline) media. The V4A stainless steel is used in areas with salt water, swimming pools and the chemical industry.

Other designations for the stainless steel are stainless steel, stainless steel, stainless steel, V2A, V4A or the current material numbers 1.4301, 1.4305, 1.4571 and 1.4404.

In order to obtain an exact composition and material names, the stainless steel is specified in DIN 17440 by material numbers. DIN 17440 has now been replaced by the European DIN EN 10088. In this case, further stainless steel grades have been added

Exact names for the stainless steel we have in use are:

V2A: WNo. 1.4301 or also AISI 304 or V2A (X5CrNi189)

V4A: WNr 1.4571 or also AISI 316 or V4A (X10CrNiMoTil810)

Application example: Stainless steel fans in the offshore sector

Our stainless steel fans made of V4A have optimum saltwater compatibility and are therefore used in the offshore sector. The aluminum casting of the motor housings is a eutectic alloy, which offers the following advantages, among others:

  • Excellent mold filling properties
  • High hot cracking resistance
  • First-class casting properties with good chemical resistance
  • Good general corrosion resistance

The aluminum alloy offers good corrosion resistance to seawater and can withstand ordinary offshore environmental conditions without protective coating. However, as the conditions of use and requirements may vary, additional painting with saltwater-resistant paint is possible on request. Additional tests, which we can carry out in cooperation with experienced test laboratories, can be helpful here in advance. We also offer the use of special shaft sealing rings to achieve the IPx6 water protection rating.
Our stainless steel fans with the combination of salt water resistance and increased IPx6 degree of protection have already been used successfully on drilling platforms for several years.

Background knowledge: Corrosion of V4A in seawater

The corrosion resistance of fans in offshore applications is achieved by a thin passive layer in combination with sufficient strength. In a seawater environment, so-called intergranular corrosion - also known as grain decay - can occur, especially next to a weld. When heated, the chromium combines with carbon to form chromium carbide, which precipitates at the grain boundaries. The intergranular cracks can lead to fracture and pulverization of the metal. V4A, or material 1.4571, exhibits resistance to intergranular corrosion.
Our experience in fan manufacturing shows that the V4A steels we use in axial fans and centrifugal fans can withstand corrosion under extreme conditions for a sufficiently long time.
